Agricom.id, JAKARTA - Ministry of Agriculture led by Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL) does care about medical plant development, such as, ginger. Zingibar officianale is one medical plant nationally besides turmeric and cardamom. In the Covid-19 pandemic, it is in good prospect because of increasing demands.
The ginger production in 2017-2020 was stable nationally or about 174 – 216 thousand tons/year or 195 thousand tons/year in the average. "In the last two years, the domestic production reached the hit - 313 thousand tons in 2015 and 340 thousand tons in 2016,” General Director of Horticulture Ministry of Agriculture, Prihasto Setyanto said, Saturday (17/4), as in the official statement to Agricom.id.
To support the production and productivity in our country, in 2021 Ministry of Agriculture starts developing integrated ginger area from the upstream to downstream sectors through Kampung Tanaman Obat. The program also covers Kampung Hortikultura in a whole.
The targets in Kampung Jahe in 2021 would cover 305 hectares in 53 villages of 47 districts/cities in 22 provinces.
Kampung Obat, besides being developed in the central areas, is also developed in new areas and supports grand design alternative development of psychotropic plants to the medical plant commodities. They would be in Bireun, Aceh Besar and Kapuas Hulu.
But in detail, 22 provinces which would get the allocation in Kampung Jahe are, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Banten, Bali, Aceh, North Sumatera, West Sumatera, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatera, Bengkulu, Lampung, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Nusa Tenggara Timur, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, and Papua.
Based on the information from the field officers and agriculture agency many provinces in Pembahasan Angka Sementara SPH Tanaman Biofarmaka 2020 in February 2021, the decreasing ginger production in some province happened for the low productivity, the plant substitution to short period - commercial commodities, and land change use.
“We once did meet with related stakeholders to discuss ginger for the last three years. It was revealed that the ginger production in 2019 - 2021 is positive still. This indicated that the ginger is still available in our country to fulfill direct consumption, for the industries, for exports, and seeds,” Director of Vegetable and Medical Plants, Tommy Nugraha said.
Manager of Plantation Cultivation of PT. Industri Jamu and Farmasi Sido Muncul, Tbk., Bambang Supartoko said that the ginger needs in the domestic could be seen in the available production if it is well managed. “But the issues are about the quality standards and unstable harvest season. These have something to do with the cultivation in many places,” he said.
The government, he continued, needs to manage the areas and facilitate the production facility, namely the qualified seeds. It needs to develop the cultivation, post-harvest management for the ginger producers to bridge the downstream products.
Head of Pusat Kajian Hortikultura Tropika (PKHT) Institut Pertanian Bogor, Awang Maharijaya told that the ginger needs for the housing and industries are available still. It just needs to increase the quality and productivity knowing that the demands are in good trend.
“It needs to update the needs namely for the industries so that the production plant would be on target and could anticipate the lack,” he said.
Based on Central Bureau of Statistic, the ginger imports per year reached 11 thousand tons and the highest imports took place in 2019 (21,7 thousand tons) but decreased in 2020 (19,2 thousand tons). (A2)
