Agricom.id, JAKARTA - Fraksi Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) Commission IV Indonesian Legislators urged the government to stop and even cancel rice import for about 1 million ton that Perum Badan Urusan Logistik (Bulog) allocates. Member of Commission IV, Andi Akmal Pasluddin told that in the press conference, Monday (8/3/2021).

"We reject the plan to rice import for about one million tons. We are not anti-import but if the import makes the farmers bad but gives billions of rupiah to some sides, this is a shame. The government should not do import for this would be the loss for the farmers,” he said.

He also urged the government to stop the drama about import. He thought, the government did silent imports. All of a sudden, there were imports with no discussion and logical explanation.

“Rice import would always be contradictive. There would be many unreasonable reasons and this is not the same as the fact,” he said, as in the official statement to Agricom.id.

He also mentioned that the government needs to improve every policy not to hurt the farmers who fight for everything to increase the domestic production.

“The government should commit to improve the import policy not to hurt the farmers and the people of this country,” he mentioned.

General Secretary of Kontak Tani Nelayan Andalan (KTNA), Yadi Sofyan Noor also urged the government to review the rice import policy. He thought that it is not the right one knowing that the farmers in many regions are in annual crops.

“Some regions are in crops, such as, Aceh, North Sumatera, South Sumatera, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Papua, South Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, East Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan. It is hoped that the government through Perum Bulog should immediately get the paddy production from the regions,” he said.

He thought, it is important for Bulog to buy the farmers’ production in the pandemic for they are difficult to spend their hard work, time, and efforts to increase the production, namely to anticipate the food scarcity, referring to Ministry of Agriculture.

Yudi continued that based on Central Bureau of Statistic (CBS), rice production in 2020 was higher than it in 2019. CBS also released that paddy production in 2021 would be increasing. In January to April 2021, there would be 25,37 million tons of milled dry grain (MDG) or increased 5,37 million tons compared to the same period in 2020 which reached 19,99 million tons of MDG.

"KTNA does appreciate what President Joko Widodo told to carefully do imports. The president urged that there would be no additional imports but increasing the domestic production,” he said. (A2)
